6. Theme 1: Love Bites.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

William Shakespeare, 1600
Famous for: Quarreling lovers, mischievous fairies, and a guy who’s a real, um, donkey.

Shakespeare makes his main theme in A Midsummer Night’s Dream pretty obvious: this play is about the difficulties of love. But because A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy, not a tragedy, the representations of this theme are, well, comedic. Get clued in to the laughs (and how they reinforce Shakespeare’s point) here.
