Characters: The Awakening

The Awakening

Kate Chopin, 1899
Famous for: A free-thinking leading lady who refused to be caged by society's expectations. A beginning and an ending at the ocean.

Characters like the protagonist in The Awakening | 60second Recap®The Awakening’s cast of characters revolves around Edna Pontellier, the protagonist. Her lifeless marriage to work-absorbed Léonce Pontellier leads her to confide in Madame Adèle Ratignolle, who sparks Edna’s awakening. That sends Edna into the arms of suave and chaste Robert Lebrun…and into the bed of suave and seductive Alcée Arobin. It leads her to Mademoiselle Reisz, the virtuoso pianist who awakens Edna to the rewards and sacrifices of the artist’s life.

If psychiatrists had existed in Louisiana of the 1890s, she might have next spun right through the doors of a therapist’s office, as we imagine here.

Her and Me and You by Lauren Strasnick.

Doctor: Do you know why I asked you to come here today, Edna?

Edna: Some people in town think I’m not well. And you want to …

Doctor: …Perform a brief test, my dear. Just to see what’s what. Look at this picture, if you will. Friend or foe?

Edna: Foe.

Doctor: But why, Edna? Is not Mr. Pontellier an attentive husband?

Edna: Oh, he admires me the way he admires his other possessions. He thinks I exist to be his version of ideal womanhood. Well, I’ll have you know that I will no longer be owned by him.

Doctor: Let’s take a look at another one.

Edna: Mademoiselle Reisz? She is a friend indeed. She seems to understand my need for … freedom. And her piano playing … never have I heard such music …

Doctor: Please focus, Edna. What about this one?

Edna: Alcèe? He … well, friend. He’s a bit of a flirt … thinks he loves me but … but we don’t speak the same language at all …

Doctor: Well, what about this man?

Edna: Robert! Oh, my own sweet Robert! We could have been together, but you said goodbye … goodbye because I love you. You left me, Robert. You left me …
