How hard could it be to harvest lettuce? Or what about working in a chicken processing plant? Pretty gross, maybe. But tough? Well, Gabriel Thompson has news for you. He spent a year trying out the jobs that most Americans won’t do … and discovered the skill, fortitude, and plain hard work it takes to get that lettuce on your salad plate and that chicken in your sandwich. And though Thompson doesn’t come to any eye-opening conclusions about his year in the fields, and in the plant, and then on the streets of New York City (where he delivered take-out by bike), his experiences themselves are eye-opening—and well worth reading.
