In The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, life is sweet and comfortable for little Bonnie and her cousin Sylvia. There may be packs of terrifying wolves roaming the countryside; Bonnie’s parents may be about to set off on a fateful sea voyage; there may be intruders and villains and criminals lurking about. But everything will turn out OK in the end, won’t it?
If you’re reading this description and you’re over the age of nine, it’s likely that this setup sounds awfully familiar. That’s because Joan Aiken’s book is the stuff of fairy tales, really. The beloved main character comes face to face with evil, and evil finds that it has met its match. But just how Bonnie and Sylvia defeat the forces of evil lurking in the English countryside has nothing to do with the Brothers Grimm. It’s pure Joan Aiken—and pure fun.
