Jenny’s rating (out of 5 stars): 4 You’ll like this book if: You like poetry that reveals the surprises in everyday objects and occurrences. You won’t like this book if: You think that Billy Collins’ quest to discover meaning in every little mundane thing is getting a little old.
If you haven’t read much poetry, Billy Collins may be the guy to start with. He’s accessible and totally un-pretentious. But his poems still pack a punch. In Sailing Alone Around the Room, Collins reveals the extraordinary in the ordinary—the surprise, the beauty, the hilarity in a snowfall, or a log split for firewood, or even a lingerie catalog. Of course, it doesn’t always work. But when it does, you’ll find that Collins’ poems are the kind you can savor on the first read, or on your fiftieth.
