What’s not to like about beautiful, scenic, rural Oregon? For starters, it’s not Portland, where all Ronnie’s friends are. It’s also not the intellectual/cultural/hipster hub where Ronnie pictured herself developing into her pre-college self. And then there’s the dead girl in the river … As avid readers of fiction will suspect early on, the scenic beauty of Ronnie’s new town is merely a façade for some pretty horrifying activity, which quickly sweeps Ronnie into its dangerous whirlpool. Mary Jane Beaufrand’s The River is a troubling book to be sure, but some of its grim-ness is counterbalanced by dark humor and beautiful writing. Best of all is the (semi-predictable) high school romance that’s both sweet and satisfying.
