If you’ve ever told a white lie—or a whopper—just to get out of something you didn’t want to do, you’ll relate to the characters in this play. Better yet, if you’ve ever fallen in love with someone’s eye color, or the clothes they wear, or especially with someone’s name, you’ll totally understand where these characters are coming from. That’s what happens to Algernon, Ernest (aka Jack), Gwendolen, and Cecily—the foolish young lovers who make up the cast of this play. Playwright Oscar Wilde has a good laugh at their expense, but you will, too. That’s because The Importance of Being Earnest might be social criticism, but it’s also just a whole lot of fun.
