Katniss Everdeen is a survivor. Peeta Mellark is the son of a baker—the boy who once saved Katniss’s life. Unfortunately, they’ve both been selected as participants in this year’s Hunger Games. Even more unfortunately, the rules say that only one of them can survive. In Katniss and Peeta’s post-apocalyptic society, life revolves around the Games—a sort of war-based reality show, generously televised for the people of Panem to watch. You’ll watch, too—as though you can’t help it. Sure, there’s an excess of blood, but there’s also enough action to make sure you don’t put this book down until you’ve read the last page. All of which doesn’t exactly make for great literature, but if you’re looking for an exciting, heart-thumping read, The Hunger Games is definitely it.
