This week’s Pick is a mixed bag. On the one hand, there’s the powerful, beautiful writing—more like poetry than prose. There’s the author’s grasp of teenage emotions—and her hyper-effective ability to convey those emotions in a way that feels startlingly real. On the other hand, there’s the subject matter of this book, which is disturbing, upsetting, and semi-compelling … in a macabre sort of way.
So be forewarned: Alex’s story about being the new kid in town, and the child of divorced parents, and the teenage girl in a strange love triangle, is a quick and occasionally-seductive read. But in a book rife with so many troubling issues, don’t expect a happy or satisfying ending.
Genre: Fiction (YA) Jenny’s rating (out of 5 stars): 3.5 You’ll like this book if: An intriguing love story keeps you turning the pages. You won’t like this book if: Creepy, messed-up relationship dynamics, plus underage drinking, teen angst, and psychological disorders don’t sound appealing.
