Some people might call God Went to Beauty School a book about God, but don’t be so quick to categorize this collection of poetry. Sure, the humor and surprise in these poems often come from the fact that Cynthia Rylant has chosen to imagine the everyday details of this world from the perspective of the Divine. But these poems are also about new ways of seeing—and about how a creator might celebrate his work. In other words, you don’t need to be remotely religious to enjoy Rylant’s poetry, but don’t be surprised if it leaves you feeling downright divine.
