David and Charlie couldn’t be more different. David is wealthy and popular. Charlie is a nobody—a charity case at the all-boys’ private school where he and David are both students. But when David’s therapist diagnoses him as “disassociated” and prescribes a cutting-edge technology as treatment, the boys’ lives begin to intersect in strange and meaningful ways. The action revolves around Rose, the Companion (read: life-like robot) who’s supposed to solve all David’s problems. Unfortunately for David, Rose is without the “girl parts” he feels are necessary to really connect, and a break-up, then a suicide attempt, then a surprise connection between Rose and Charlie follow. Girl Parts may be set in a future when technology seems to hold all the answers, but as it turns out, this book’s “future” looks surprisingly like the present.
