The Big Crunch is sort of a tough book to explain. A romance? That takes place over 288 pages? Between two characters who barely even notice each other at first? Somehow, though, it works—more than works, actually. That’s because Pete Hautman has skillfully woven a tale of two teens who eventually do collide … into a comedic, confusing first-real-romance that turns out to be surprisingly compelling. It’s not Hollywood love that June and Wes find—it’s not perfect, or perfectly romantic—but the urgent, sometimes-uncertain kind that’s infinitely more satisfying … and a whole lot sweeter.
