Samara (Sam) Taylor is not having a good summer. Her mom’s in rehab after a DUI; her pastor father seems to have time for everyone … except for his family; and Sam is dreading the announcement that there’s no money for her to return to her beloved private school in the fall. That’s why, when thirteen-year-old Jody Shaw goes missing from Sam’s small town, Sam’s world doesn’t just teeter; it goes into full tilt.
In spite of the fact that Sam’s doubts in this story revolve around matters of faith, Once Was Lost isn’t really so much a book about religion, as it is about what happens when the things we accept as undeniably true are suddenly called into question. Throw in a whole lot of suspense and a little romance, and you’ve got a book that’s as thought-provoking as it is difficult to put down.
Genre: Fiction (YA) Jenny’s rating (out of 5 stars): 4.5 You’ll like this book if: You like suspense … and philosophical questions. You won’t like this book if: Teen angst and unhappy families upset you.
