Macbeth's plot is all about power. That’s because in Macbeth, the central characters are either lusting for power, questing after power, or defending their power. So how does the power struggle shake out? Let’s just say that Shakespeare didn’t call Macbeth a tragedy for nothing.

Video Transcription:

The plot of Macbeth is all about power: The lust for power, the quest for power, and the defense of power.

The thing is, because Macbeth is a tragedy, you know this power struggle isn’t going to turn out well for anyone.

Act I: Macbeth returns from battle and hears the witches’ prophecy: He’ll be named Baron of Glamis and Cawdor, and will eventually be King of Scotland. Macbeth isn’t sure what to think until King Duncan surprises him with the first two titles. Enter the lust for power! Calling on the prophecy, Lady Macbeth plots to murder Duncan… and she convinces Macbeth to do the killing.

Act II: The quest for power begins. In spite of his misgivings, Macbeth kills Duncan, and frames the King’s servants. The scene erupts into chaos as Duncan is mourned and his sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, flee for their lives.

Act III: The defense of power kicks in. King Macbeth becomes consumed by the witches’ second prophecy: That Banquo’s children, not Macbeth’s, will be the future kings of Scotland. Macbeth has Banquo killed … and foresees a future of violence.

Act IV: The defense of power continues. The witches offer another prophecy about Macbeth and his greatest threat, Macduff. Desperate to hold on to his title, Macbeth plots to kill Macduff. Macduff’s family dies, but Macduff survives—and vows revenge on Macbeth.

Act V: In a surprise twist, the witches’ final prophecy comes true, and Macbeth pays the price: Death at the hands of Macduff.
