60second Reboot: This breathing exercise erases stress in one minute.

What is it?

60second Reboot.

How does it work?

Set aside sixty seconds before a test or assignment that requires problem-solving or memory recall. Stand or sit quietly.

Count to five (one second per count) while breathing in, then count to five (again, one second per count) while breathing out.

Repeat this breathing cycle five more times.

One set breathing in, followed by one set breathing out. Twelve sets total. Sixty seconds of your time.

Why does it work?

60second Reboot’s controlled breathing exercise increases oxygen flow to the brain, and has been shown to stimulate the release of neurotransmitters that support calmness and focus.

What else should I know?

Researchers at Harvard Medical School recently discovered that controlled breathing can increase brain size. The U.S. Department of Defense is financing a multi-million dollar study on how “mindful meditation” can increase intelligence. And a recently-published study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that breathing with focus and intention increased brain cell density by as much as 8%.
